Renewing Permanent Resident Cards in Ottawa

A permanent resident in Canada is someone who holds a permanent resident card. Since 2002, these permanent resident cards have been received automatically once the person lands in Canada.

In order to apply to renew your card once it expires every year, you must fill out an application form and provide documentation to the Canadian immigration authorities. But renewing your permanent resident card is not as easy as just filling out a form. If you do not meet the requirements, your application could be denied and your permanent resident status in Canada could be in jeopardy.

Helpful tips when renewing your permanent resident card in Ottawa

1. Remember, you do not have to wait until your permanent resident card expires to apply to renew it. You may apply to renew your card at any time. If you like leaving things until the last minute or find yourself running out of time, you should apply to renew your permanent resident card no later than three months before the expiry date. This is because your application will take up to three months alone to process.

2. When you submit your renewal, you need to be in Canada. You also must stay in Canada while your permanent resident card renewal is being processed, until you’re told to pick up your new card.

3. When you make your application, read and understand the instructions, complete the form in full and include all of the supporting documentation necessary. Your application will be returned to you if it is incomplete, but if you make a mistake it could be denied.

4. When you are a permanent resident in Canada it will help make things easier if you keep track of all your travel. This is so you can keep track of your residency days in Canada and help make it clear for the officer processing your application. Keep your travel receipts and travel itineraries whenever possible.

5. Do not forget that you may be able to count some days outside of Canada as days in Canada if you were accompanying a Canadian citizen spouse abroad or working abroad yourself for a Canadian company. To see if you’ve met the residency requirement, call us.
