Renewing a PR card in Ottawa in 2012

If you live in Ottawa and need to renew your permanent resident card for the first time, read on!

Renewing your permanent resident card involves mailing an application package to the Case Processing Centre and waiting for notification that your application has been approved and that you can go and pick it up. You are required to pick up your renewed permanent resident card within 180 days, otherwise you’ll have to start the process over again.

This must be done every five years and we recommend mailing your application at least three months before the expiry date on your card.

What if I have not met the residency requirement?

One of the things you need to renew your permanent resident card in Canada is proof that you have met the minimum required physical presence in Canada. As such, you must have been in Canada (physically present, living and working) for two years of the last five. Sometimes, extenuating circumstances can prevent you from meeting this residency requirement. If you cannot meet this residency requirement but must renew your permanent resident card, you must have a valid reason. One example is that you had to rush off to care for a sick parent abroad, but you must be able to prove this.

When you ask for an exception for a reason such as the one above, this is called an exception on humanitarian and compassionate grounds. This is a possibility for those who have not met the residency requirement, but it is not easy.

What if my permanent resident card already expired but I’m outside Canada?

Your permanent resident card is your ticket home, like a passport would be for a Canadian citizen. Without a valid PR card, you will not be able to return with ease.

If you are outside of Canada without a valid permanent resident card, visit your closet foreign office abroad and apply for a travel document. You’ll still need to prove you’ve met the residency requirement to get one, but if you are approved for one you’ll be able to return to Canada and renew your PR card.

If your new permanent resident card is not being mailed to you, your permanent resident card will likely be available to be picked up at the Ottawa office, located at:

200 Catherine St.
Suite 101
Ottawa, ON
K2P 2K9
