How to renew a PR card in Canada

It is important that you do your best to ensure you have a valid permanent resident card at all times as a permanent resident in Canada, and this is one of the criteria for maintaining your permanent resident status in Canada.

How to renew your pr card in Canada

Take note of when your current permanent resident card is going to expire. You will have to make sure that you apply to renew your card at least three months in advance of this expiry date. You can check the Citizenship and Immigration Canada for current processing times to see if three months is enough. For example, as of October 10th, 2012, the current processing times are 87 calendar days for initial cards, renewals and replacement cards. This information is updated weekly.

You will need to obtain and complete the application package, which includes an Application for a Permanent Resident Card. The same form (form IMM5444) is used to apply for your initial (first) permanent resident card, replace a permanent resident card and renew a permanent resident card. You’ll just need to check the box at the top of the form that indicates it is for renewal.

Fill out the form completely and clearly, printing or typing in blue or black ink. Even tiny instructions such as your ink colour must be followed exactly, or you could risk having your application returned to you. Do not skip any parts of the application.

Obtain and fill out the Supplementary Information Form, or Form IMM5455, and include it in your application.

Gather all of the supporting documents you will need for your application including your proof of residence, identity documents and new photos. There is a document checklist on the IMM5444 that explains all of the things you will need to include.

Pay the fee, and include your receipt in your application package.

7. Mail your application package. You can keep your existing permanent resident card until Citizenship and Immigration Canada tells you that your new one is ready, and when you go pick up your new card you will have to bring the old one with you.

Note that the permanent resident card renewal application must be just so. Your writing must be clear, you must not make any errors, any photo copies you include must be crystal clear and you must demonstrate that you have met the residency requirement.

If you are concerned about your permanent residency card renewal application, please contact our immigration law firm. We can help you, even if you have not met the residency requirement or you are currently outside of Canada.
